Cuisine & Specialties
The Spot is a health-focused breakfast and brunch cafe. It serves organic, chef-inspired American-style fare with a tropical twist. Think build-your-own superfood bowls (açai and pitaya bases with fruit, granola and drizzles), smoothies, and made-to-order soft-serve treats. Vegetarian and vegan options are plentiful, and houses-made syrups and local ingredients (tropical fruits, local honey, coconut) give a Hawaiian flavor.
- Signature items: Famous açai/pitaya bowls piled with fresh fruit and granola; hearty breakfast bowls (e.g. “Wake’n’Bacon” eggs-and-bacon skillet with potatoes, cheddar and chipotle cream); creative lattes (like a Thai-inspired coconut crème latte); and dessert-inspired soft-serve bowls (e.g. chocolate-banana “Chunky Monkey”).
- Regional touches: Uses island-grown toppings (mango, papaya, lilikoi/passion fruit, macadamia nuts) and locally roasted Hanalei coffee. Trendy superfood ingredients and Hawaiian accents keep the menu fresh and healthful.
Notable Features & Ambiance
- Price Range: $$ (moderate). Portion sizes lean generous for the cost.
- Amenities: Counter-service only (order and pick up at a window). Covered outdoor courtyard seating is available in the Princeville Shopping Center (near Ace Hardware and others). Fast Wi-Fi, casual shared tables, and takeout packaging make it easy for quick meals.
- Atmosphere: Bright, laid-back cafe vibe with a beachy/surf-inspired decor. It’s very casual – think island breakfast spot; flip-flops and shorts are fine. The vibe is friendly and family-friendly, with locals and tourists mingling over smoothies and breakfasts. No formal dress code is enforced.
- Accessibility: Easily accessible at ground level (shopping center location). Plenty of free parking is available in the adjacent lot. The covered patio and entrances accommodate wheelchairs and strollers. (Note: The cafe space is small, so wheelchair users may need assistance maneuvering during busy times.)
History & Background
The Spot was founded by North Shore native Nani Lane and Kauai resident Ellie Marcus. The two met on Hanalei Bay and discovered they shared a dream of opening a healthy, organic cafe. They launched the first Spot in Kapa’a in March 2017 and opened this second “North Shore” location in the Princeville Shopping Center in late 2018. (During the pandemic the Kapa’a shop closed, making Princeville the sole remaining location.) Nani, who grew up on Kauai and worked in local food service, handles recipe development, while Ellie brought marketing/small-business experience. Together they built The Spot around values of fresh, locally sourced ingredients and community. Over the years they’ve earned a reputation as one of the North Shore’s go-to breakfast spots – even local news outlets covered the grand opening.
Review Sentiment Snapshot
- What guests rave about: Reviewers consistently praise the fresh, vibrant menu and friendly service. Visitors love the customizable superfood bowls (acai and pitaya) with ample fruit and granola. The housemade smoothies, lattes (especially with macadamia nut or tropical syrup add-ins), and creative breakfast entrees earn high marks. Many note the positive, casual vibe and say it’s a great way to start the day on Kauai.
- Common criticisms: The most frequent complaint is long waits during peak hours. (Expect a 15–20 minute wait or more on busy mornings.) Customers also mention the limited daily hours (no dinner service, and note that it’s closed one day a week) and small shop size. A few reviews note that popular menu items can sell out late in the day, and there have been gripes about sparse fruit toppings or no traditional espresso machine. On balance, though, the emphasis on quality and healthy ingredients generally wins fans.
Practical Visitor Tips
- Hours: Generally open early for breakfast/lunch (around 7:30 am) and closing mid-afternoon. Currently the schedule is roughly 7:30 am–1:30 pm, Thursday–Tuesday, closed Wednesdays, but always double-check current hours online or by phone.
- Getting in & Reservations: There are no reservations or call-ahead pickup; it’s first-come counter service. Arrive soon after opening to beat the crowds – weekend late mornings often have lines. During slower periods (early morning or just after the lunch rush) the wait is shorter.
- Ordering: Pop-up take-out style ordering. Place your order at the counter, pay, and then collect it at the window. Most items (bowls, coffees) are made to order, so small waits are normal. Tip: watch out for daily specials or full-size/make-your-own bowl options if you have dietary needs.
- Seating: Limited covered seating in the outdoor courtyard. You’re welcome to sit in the shared patio area; it fills up, so earlier guests have pick of tables.
- Payment & Amenities: Credit cards are accepted (no cover charge), and water is self-serve. The cafe participates in local loyalty promotions (e.g. occasional free topping deals for Hawaiian Restaurant Card members).
- What to bring: It’s casual, but bring sunscreen or a hat if you plan to sit outside. Kids enjoy it here (kid-friendly food options like yogurt and smoothie bowls).
- Miscellaneous: It’s strictly a breakfast/lunch spot – no dinner service or alcohol. The cafe does not typically allow outside food or pets (service animals excepted). Since it can get busy, consider planning their visit as the first stop of the day.
