- Reservations recommended
- Walk-ins welcome
The Tasting Room is one of Kōloa’s more distinctive dinner stops: an evening-only American wine bar where the drinks list is as much a draw as the food. Set in Old Kōloa Town, it stands out for a polished but unpretentious approach to dinner—shareable plates, a few fuller entrées, and a room that feels made for lingering over wine, cocktails, and conversation.
What it does best
The kitchen lands in a sweet spot between casual wine-bar grazing and a proper sit-down dinner. The menu leans American, but with a tapas- or pupu-style rhythm: small plates, salads, seafood, chicken, steak, lamb, and desserts that can build into a complete meal. Standouts include hamachi crudo, smoked beet salad with goat cheese, chicken Marbella, pesto broiled mahi mahi, roasted lamb rack, and a rib eye steak board. It is also a smart place for dessert, with options like panna cotta, gluten-free lava cake, and apple cobbler cheesecake.
The drinks program is central to the experience. Wine flights, cocktails, beer, and a broad spirits list give the restaurant a more serious beverage program than many neighborhood spots of its size. For travelers who like to match food and drink, this is one of the restaurant’s biggest strengths. The family-run background adds personality too: the place opened in Kōloa in 2019 and grew out of a local ʻohana concept, which helps explain why it feels rooted rather than generic.
The feel of the place
The Tasting Room is best understood as a relaxed, intimate dinner room rather than a rushed meal stop. The setting is cozy and polished, with the kind of atmosphere that works well for a date night or a small group dinner. It is intentionally wine-forward, but not stiff; the tone is more welcoming than formal.
Hours matter here. This is a dinner-only restaurant, open Tuesday through Saturday from 5:00 PM to 9:30 PM. Reservations are recommended, though walk-ins are welcome. That makes it especially useful as a South Shore evening anchor after a day at the beach, exploring Kōloa, or driving back from Poʻipū.
Tradeoffs to know
The main caveat is that this is not a place for quick, cheap, or oversized portions. Even with a budget-friendly listing in some systems, the actual menu and drink program point to a mid-priced dinner once you start ordering a few plates and wine. The sharing format is part of the appeal, but it also means bigger appetites may need multiple dishes to feel fully satisfied.
It is also not the best match for lunch seekers, very late dinners, or groups looking for a fast family-style meal. The menu tilts toward fish, meat, cheese, and butter-rich dishes, so strict vegetarians and vegans may find the options limited.
Who it’s best for
The Tasting Room is an excellent fit for couples, small groups, and travelers who want a slower, more intentional dinner with good wine. It is especially appealing if the evening plan is to order a few plates, split a dessert, and stay awhile.
If the goal is casual bites, a big portioned plate lunch, or a no-fuss family meal, there are better fits elsewhere on Kauai. But for a South Shore dinner with character, this is one of Kōloa’s most appealing tables.
