How to Get This Shot
Seasonality
Great frigatebirds can be seen around Kauaʻi year-round, especially along windy shorelines where seabirds cruise on updrafts.
For more frequent and active seabird viewing, late spring through summer often brings calmer seas and clearer visibility, while winter can deliver dramatic surf and wind (great for action, tougher for sharp shots).
Photo Tips
- Use 2–3x (or max optical) zoom; avoid heavy digital zoom and crop later
- Tap-and-hold to lock focus/exposure on the bird; slightly underexpose to protect white chest highlights
- Shoot bursts/Live Photo to capture wing positions and a sharp eye
- Keep extra space in front of the bird (lead room) for a more dynamic composition
- Brace elbows and pan smoothly with the bird to reduce motion blur
Logistics & Safety
The GPS points to Kauaʻi’s southeast coast near Līhuʻe/Nawiliwili; look for open coastal viewpoints with steady trade winds where birds cruise along the shoreline. Bring sun/wind protection and be mindful of waves and cliff edges; keep a respectful distance from any resting or nesting seabirds.
